Despite losing Jonjo Shelvey to a straight red following a full blooded 50/50 tackle with Johnny Evans, Liverpool took the lead early in the 2nd half through Stevie Gerrard. The Reds were however immediately pegged back by a Rafael wonder strike, before Mark Halsey controversially awarded United a penalty for a foul on Antonio Valencia., which Robin Van Persie duly dispatched.
